What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, which allows you to experience a natural state of profound physical and mental relaxation – free from everyday worries and cares.

When you are under hypnosis, your attention is much more focussed and you are more responsive to positive suggestions given by the Hypnotherapist.

During this trance-like state, it is easier to access the client’s subconscious mind, thus allowing harmful and negative patterns of behaviour to be successfully changed e.g. to enable the client to stop smoking or to lose weight.

The Hypnotic state is a totally natural occurrence experienced by many people in every day life. For instance when you become completely engrossed in a book or a film or a television programme, you can become totally unaware of what is going on around you. When you are drifting into sleep, you will find yourself in an almost self-induced trance state. Another example of this is when you drive to a familiar destination without later being able to recall details of the actual journey.

All of the above examples are similar to what happens to you during Hypnosis.

Sometimes people are concerned that they will lose control whilst in Hypnosis – but they are always in control of the situation and can choose to emerge from the hypnotic process at any time. They are fully able to communicate with the therapist at all times and can stand up and leave the room if they want to do so.

While in the hypnotic state, a person can not be made to do anything against their ethical or moral judgements, or their religious beliefs.

Anyone of normal intelligence can go into hypnosis as long as they want to be hypnotised and willingly co-operate with the therapist.

Most people feel mentally and physically very relaxed during and after a Hypnosis session – a welcome alternative to the frequent stressful states that many people experience in their daily lives.
